Field Biologist (Variable On-Call)
Position Overview
Bancroft Construction Services is seeking an experienced On-Call Variable Field Biologist to support project-based surveys with a focus on Crotch’s bumble bee (Bombus crotchii). This is an as-needed position supporting seasonal survey efforts and other special-status species work as required.
The ideal candidate will have completed the Xerces Society Crotch’s bumble bee survey training and possess demonstrated field experience conducting protocol-level surveys for this species. This position is best suited for a motivated biologist who is detail-oriented, comfortable working independently in field settings, and experienced with regulatory survey requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct protocol-level surveys for Crotch’s bumble bee (Bombus crotchii) in accordance with current regulatory and agency guidelines
- Implement survey methodologies consistent with Xerces Society training protocols
- Identify bumble bee species in the field and/or collect specimens or photo documentation for later verification
- Record accurate and detailed field data, including:
- Habitat conditions
- Floral resources
- Weather conditions
- GPS coordinates
- Prepare thorough field notes and contribute to technical reports
- Coordinate with project managers and regulatory staff to ensure survey compliance
- Maintain professional conduct with clients, agencies, landowners, and the public
- Adhere to all company safety protocols and field safety best practices
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Entomology, or related field
- Completion of Xerces Society Crotch’s bumble bee survey training (required)
- Demonstrated experience conducting Crotch’s bumble bee protocol-level surveys
- Experience identifying native bumble bee species in the field
- Strong data collection, documentation, and organizational skills
- Ability to hike long distances over uneven terrain in variable weather conditions
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
Work Environment
This position is field-intensive and may involve:
- Extended periods outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Hiking over uneven terrain while carrying field equipment
- Travel throughout the Central Valley and surrounding regions
- Early morning start times during peak survey season
Compensation & Employment Status
- Hourly rate: Range $35-60/hr. based on experience
- Employment Type: On-call / project-based
- This position is not benefit-eligible
